Healthy mind, body, and soul is what Miss Sophomore candidate, LaTaysia Cowens, from Birmingham,AL, wants to focus on as her platform. “I want students to know that it’s ok and for them to be aware of suicide, mental illness, etc.” Cowens is a Physical Education major, which makes her platform relevant and personal to her self. Cowen stated that if she is granted the Miss Sophomore position she will work with students to ensure that they are given opportunities to become aware of mental illness, anxiety, and depression. Cowen will also host speaker and counseling events for students to be able to personally connect with one another and express their feelings in a private setting. “I’ve been through it before and I wouldn’t want anyone else to go through that,” Cowens added. She will use her personal experience to be able to interact with her class and make herself relatable and let them no that she, too, deals with personal problems, just as any other student. As Miss Sophomore she would also like to be a mentor and role model to her peers along with younger and prospective students. Cowens announced that she is not apart of any organizations on campus and has never done anything on this large of a scale, but “it’s a new experience,” Cowens said. As a Freshman Cowens noted that the current class queens are not as visible on campus, as Miss Sophomore she would like to change that and become involved and interact with students on campus. She would also like to host events within dorms in order to have her four heard and her face seen.
