Jaylan Brown, a Jackson, MS native and marketing major, has decided to make it her job to encourage students to be themselves with using the acronym BE YOU. Which stands for Bold, Educated, Young, Original, and Unstoppable. Brown is aware that students can easily lose themselves during their first year of college and become someone who they are not, but if you stay true to who you are then you have no worries. As Brown is new to ASU she says that she has used her platform to become relatable and reach out to students as she becomes vocal about her candidacy. She uses the words “smart, hardworking, and creative” to describe herself. In the past, Brown has held a leadership position, at her old high school, as the historian and president of the BETA Club; She was also the choir director for her high school choir. If Brown is granted the Miss Freshman position she plans on bringing “self awareness” to campus, and specifically her class. She wants to host body shaming forums and encourage students to grow to become the “best form of themselves.” As Miss Freshman Brown promises to represent her class in a positive light, be open and transparent about her experiences, be a spokesperson for her class, and bring the right light and attention to problems they face as a whole. Just before Brown ended her interview she shared one of her favorite quotes and what her platform is catered to, by Maya Angelou, “If you’re always trying to be normal you’ll never know how amazing you can be.”
