“I want to be an avid leader… I don’t see why we all can’t be great!” Miss Freshman candidate, Mariah McClary, from Orlando,FL, is desperate to see change at Alabama State University and she is making it her duty to make it happen, or at least bring awareness to it. “ASU took a chance on me, so I have to take a chance on it,” and that’s exactly what McClary is doing as she runs for Miss Freshman. Her platform runs on the acronym “CARRY” which stands for Create, attentiveness, responsibility, respective, and youthful. With this platform she wants to encourage students to not only stay young and youthful, but stay involved in their university. McClary mentioned that if the University focused on smaller issues than the much larger problems could be resolved much more quickly. She has also noticed, since her summer term, that several students don’t know who or where to go for their problems. She plans to create a resource center so students can become aware of who can help them with what. If granted the position of Miss Freshman McClary wants to immediately focus on bringing down the retention rate, starting with her class. She also noted that things will not stop at being Miss Freshman. She is determined for changes and stated that “they will know I mean business,” with all of her plans and goals she will continue to pursue them even if she is not selected as Miss Freshman. McClary lives by “do unto others as you want done to you.” And that is the remark she will leaves with her class as she makes her way through ASU.
