“ I want to show care for international students so they can feel important,” said Miss Junior, Kleo Torres, as she happily explained the the reason behind “International Plate Day” at Alabama State University. International Plate Day is an event that will cater to students at the Fred Shuttlesworth Dining Hall with food from a different country. Thursday, September 20 was Jamaica. Students got to experience the culture with a live band and of course, amazing Jamaican food. Torres says it is imperative to learn different cultures because ASU has international students who are enrolled at the university and “they came into our background.” Learning the culture is good to know for it to be vice versa. Jamaica was not the only time students get to encounter tasting delicious international food in the dining all. Torres says this event will be held once a month and China or Brazil will be next in line for students to have a taste. Torres had plenty of help from the international students at ASU and reached out to them for help to make it easier for the event to take place. Torres is the former International Student Association (ISA) Miss Formal, which is a pageant she won during the 2017-2018 academic year and became apart of the organization. She is currently reigning as Miss Junior 2018-2019 and have many other events planned for the semester. In October, Torres plans to put on an event dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness month by partnering with Victoria Secret, and also an event committed to the LGBTQ community. Torres has many more events to take place throughout the semester and plans to implement these events during her reign as a class queen.
