Students at Alabama State University are mourning the loss of freshman Kennedy Segars who was pronounced dead on Oct. 14 after being hit by a drunk driver, Reginald Stubbs, 57, while at a stop light near her parents home in DeKalb County, Ga.
According to WSB-TV News in Atlanta, Ga. Segars was visiting family for her mother’s birthday over the weekend when the drunk driver rear ended her going more than 70 mph, according to police.
During a moment of silence in the Shuttlesworth dining hall, students and friends of Segars showed their respects by sharing moments they experienced with her and what they remember of her while a student at ASU.
“We take two classes together and I didn’t know her personally but she was always smiling and she was a very pretty girl and never had a sad face when you saw her so I was really shook when I saw it on twitter and she’s been on my mind ever since,” said Sanchez Brooks, freshman, Political Science major from Birmingham, Ala.
Segars was an aspiring attorney who was on a full ride scholarship while at ASU, she graduated from Decatur High School with honors.
“ I knew she wanted to be a lawyer and I’m pretty sure if she was still here she would be the right person for the job. She had high energy all the time and it just fit her personality, I’m really praying that her family finds peace and healing because I could never imagine going through what they’re going through. Appreciate every moment while on this earth because it can be cut short in a minute,” said Brittany Woods, freshman, biology major from Houston, Texas.
“I may sound a bit crazy but I’m actually praying for Kennedy and the drunk driver who killed her because you never know what people are going through, i’m not excusing what he did at all because what he did was wrong but hurt people hurt people and that’s the world we live in,” said Josh Williams, sophomore, chemistry major, Atlanta, Ga.
Stubbs was charged with vehicular homicide, DUI and other. A judge denied him bond and he is expected to appear in court for an arraignment on charges Oct 19.
