Homecoming week has just wrapped up, and the most anticipated event, by students, was the homecoming concert! Students at Alabama State University got to enjoy three hit rappers, Trina, Moneybagg Yo, and Lil Baby, in the Dunn Oliver Acadome. “Those are three of the hottest rappers right now, Trina is like a walking legend,” Sophomore, chemistry major, Nicholas Anthony, from Nashville, Ten. said. The Dunn Oliver Acadome was turned into a concert hall where the three rappers, along with some well known opening acts being D-AYE, Super Nard, and JR Boss, were able to put on the “Best homecoming since I’ve been here,” Anthony added. “We did a poll during the summer time and we picked the top three artist, that we could afford, that the students wanted. We’ve gotten some great feedback since we posted the line up, especially when we added Trina, that added even more satisfaction, it even made alumni respond and want to come out,” Student government association President, Jaylon Pickett expressed his satisfaction with the student responses to the homecoming concert. The student morale within the acadome was very high once Miami rapper, Trina, hit the stage. At the conclusion of her performance Trina (@Trinarockstar) even tweeted “Best night ever” and interacted with many of the ASU students on the #MYASU hashtag. The three artist performers some of their top hits, and student favorites, in closing Trina’s “Look back at it”, Moneybagg Yo’s “Doing too much”, and Lil Baby’s “All of a sudden” students danced, screamed, and recorded these performances from start to finish. At the conclusion of Trina’s performance the concert did have to come to a quick pause. Students were rushing the front of the stage, and several were not in their appropriate seats, so the fire marshall was forced to have to set out some regulations for the remainder of the show. Wristbands and tickets were demanded and students had to step away from the stage as the equipment crew reconnected the speakers, that were ruined with a liquid spill. So many of the students said that their favorite part was Atlanta rapper Lil Baby. “After seeing his homecoming performance at Howard I was nervous about how he would perform at ASU, but tonight he brought out a different energy,” Junior, education major from Selma, Ala. Ivana Angia said. “It’s clear that SGA listened to us (students) because they got Lil Baby, and that’s all that matters to me,” Angion stated. SGA secretary Essynce Henderson said “SGA wanted to ensure that the students were happy.” And they did just that, Junior criminal Justice major and Tuscaloosa, Ala. native, Bryant Williams said “I was just looking forward to having a good time, and I got that!” Moneybagg Yo, a Memphis rapper had the “Best student interaction,” Anthony bragged. As Moneybagg Yo performed he grabbed students phones from the crowd and made selfie videos on their snapchats and instagrams. Students fought their ways to the front of the stage to be one of those lucky students, he even gave his towel, that he used to wipe his face during his performance, to someone in the audience. Sophomore Mass communications major and Montgomery, Ala. major is currently working on an HBCU experience documentary and used this concert as a “perfect example,” she said. She documented and recorded the performers, interviewed students, and captured their excitement within the crowd. “I want people to see the fun parts, and encourage them to attend an HBCU.” Reunna Fisher, from Montgomery, Ala, a junior secondary education major said “SGA definitely listened to the students, they got everyone (artist) that we wanted.”
