Ivana Angion, junior, Selma, Ala. native and secondary education major has announced her candidacy for the 2019-2020 Miss Alabama State University title.
Angion’s platform is “How to get away with success,” which focuses on success, service, and support.
Angion will use the success portion of her platform to educate students in being successful in the forms of presentation, finance, and post-graduation.
“We like to talk about before and during graduation, but we need to talk about after and learn to prepare for it while we can… we need to learn how to move forward with grad school” Angion stated.
Angion explained that outside of serving her university she wants to serve the Montgomery community and encourage them to attend Alabama State.
As a secondary education major she plans to use her passion for students to demonstrate the service portion of her platform. “I love serving others, but most of all I love kids,” she said.
Angion plans to increase enrollment with launching a campaign titled “Dream Big Read.” “I remember when I was a kid at Brewbaker, I used to love when the students from ASU would read to us and I just want to give kids that same feeling,” said Angion.“I want the children to be involved with Alabama State, I want to start the children off young and encourage them that ASU is the way to go.” Being a Student Orientation Service (S.O.S) leader, Angion is responsible for giving prospective ASU students campus wide tours and overall information about the university, to encourage them to attend.
“Support will come from alumni… my main thing will be an alumni grill off,” Angion expressed that this will be a great way to get the alumni and students connected in a fun atmosphere. All of the money received from the event will be put toward a success scholarship, which will be awarded to a current freshman. “It will be awarded in April 2020.” “Along with support I want to revamp the student to alumni mentoring program… It’s such a wonderful thing that the university did, but many students just don’t know about it,” Angion said explaining her plans to bring more awareness to this program in order for students to benefit.
With Angion and the current Miss Alabama State University, Arianna Thompson both sharing a passion for education, Angion plans to keeps several of the current initiatives Thompson has begun, specifically the “Big Hornet Little Hornet” program.
“It’s really important for incoming freshman to know that someone cares about them, especially those who are so far from home… I think it’s something so special, especially because I’m a mentor now and I know how it can impact those in the program.”
If granted the positions Angion plans to change the dynamic of the university community and the support that comes from it. Angion previously served as an university class queen, being the 2017-2018 Miss Sophomore where she hosted forums and served the Montgomery, Ala. community in service and adopting an angel during the holiday season. “As Miss Sophomore I wasn’t able to do everything that I would have liked, but if I’m granted this position I’ll do all that I planned then plus the new ideas that I have,” Angion said Angion is heavily involved on campus as she is a member of NAACP, Student Alabama Education Association, National Success and Leadership Society, and she is the president of the campus ministry Word Up. “What separates me from the other candidates is my passion for community involvement, we need community involvement if we want ASU to strive!”
