The student body was shocked to see that the Student Government Association Attorney General issued a letter to the judicial branch requesting the removal of four student senators.

Among the senators listed are Sen.at-large Brea Williams, Sen. Cheyenne Gibson who represents the College of Education, and Sens. Janet Lagah-Bona and Emory Smith, who both represent the College of Visual and Performing Arts.

According to Article IV, Section 13 of the SGA Constitution, senators are expected to attend all scheduled senate meetings and failure to provide an excuse for three or more absences is deemed grounds for removal.

Williams has missed three Senate meetings, Gibson has missed five, and both Lagah-Bona and Smith missed four senator meetings during the fall semester.

If approved by the Judicial Branch, the senators will then be placed on trial for removal.

Senate President, Tyler Rice, noted that Attorney General Pate never requested excuses for the senators before publishing the letter on the official SGA Twitter page.

“I had no idea that this letter was being sent,” said Rice. “We were all caught off guard. I don’t think that it will go that far. If the Judicial Branch would like to see excuses, then I can provide that for them. I do not see it going to the removal of the senators, but if the judicial branch rules that there should be a trial then we will have to follow the constitution,” Rice said.

While on Christmas break, Sen. Dax Craig filed a letter of impeachment of both Student Body President, David Whitlow, Jr., and Executive Treasurer, Aliyah Muhammad. Rice believes that this is a direct attack in response to the Senate’s previous requests.

“I would hope that it’s not, but that’s what it looks like, like it was done with malicious intent,” Rice commented. Pate failed to make a statement with The Hornet Tribune in regards to the letter.
